Patchwork Quilting at The Makery

Finished quilt

After reading about the workshops available at The Makery and hearing so many good things, I was delighted to receive a gift voucher for Christmas that I could redeem for any course of my choosing! Clearly my subtle hints were not so subtle.

For those who have never heard of the Makery it is wonderful place in Bath that is part workshop, part shop. Courses cover everything from sewing to jewellery-making and the shop sells a whole host of beautiful fabrics, buttons, embellishments and more alongside. The workshop I chose was their patchwork quilting course which promised to teach you how to make a whole quilt in a day – and sure enough, by the end of it I came away with my own piece of patchwork loveliness.

From fabric selection to cutting, piecing, quilting on the machine and then finally binding, the different elements of the quilt quickly started to come together. Fuelled by multiple cups of tea and guided by the knowledge of The Makery ladies everyone on the course seemed to have a great time and we were all beaming with pride by the end! I found the course really well paced, insightful and a really chilled out way to spend a Sunday – i’d recommend it to anyone.

Quilting is such a lovely way to capture memories through fabric. In the short term I have plans to make another, much larger quilt as a throw but in the future it is something I will definitely revisit as a sentimental project.
