The best way to wear vintage and pre-loved clothing is to style key pieces with new separates or modern accessories. However, if you’re still feeling unsure as to what works with what, investing in a vintage denim jacket can be a great place to start.
The trusty denim jacket is one of those wardrobe essentials that never really goes out of fashion and the good news is that you can find a whole range of range of washes, styles and cuts all at a price to suit any pocket. In my experience, charity shops are a great place to start (don’t get put off by a little rummaging) but also check out vintage fairs and online auction sites (vinted, depop, ebay). If you still can’t find what you’re looking for remember that a tailor (or maybe your pro-sewer self) can easily alter the length and fit of the jacket or add some extra embellishments if needed.
So once you have found what you’re looking for, how do you wear it? Here are my top 7 ways to rock a denim jacket:
- Over a summer dress
Lacey dresses are lovely but they can sometimes look a little too formal for everyday wear. Try layering your lace with a denim jacket and some ankle boots for a more relaxed look that’s also British summertime ready!
- As a floaty skirt combo
The same concept applied with skirts (see picture above). If you have a one that just feels a little too frilly a denim jacket with the sleeves rolled up and the collar popped can give you a bit more edge.
- Tone down neon
What else we supposed to wear with those neon jeans?
- Double denim
Don’t be afraid! If you are going to go for it though make sure you pair two different washes.
- All in white
All white urrrythang (except for the denim jacket of course). Add some colour to your white jean, white top look.
- Pattern enhancer
Florals, geometrics, animal prints – we’ve all got them in our wardrobe, and their new best friend is your little jacket.
- Layered up
Try tying your jacket around your waste or layering it underneath another jacket to add depth – it’s the perfect look for festivals.
